Marblehead, MA — Retired firefighter Frank Bartlett Merrill, age 92, devoted husband for 68 years of Elizabeth (Betty) Merrill, of Marblehead, died peacefully at home on February 28, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong resident of Marblehead, the son of the late Frederick A. and Mildred Hardwick Merrill he attended local schools and graduated from Marblehead High School. His professional career began at the Salem Power Plant, a position he left to join the United States Marine Corps in January 1942. He was assigned to the First Marine Division in the South Pacific where he served his country in action on Guadalcanal and neighboring islands.
Frank and Betty were married in 1944 when he was home on R&R. He then reported to Quantico for new assignment, which was at the Charlestown Navy Yard where he stayed until his discharge in 1945. After discharge from the Marine Corp he became the Assistant Wiring Inspector for the Town of Marblehead and was later appointed to and served the Marblehead Fire Department until his retirement 1982.
Frank enjoyed training his German Shorthaired Pointers and hunting in New Hampshire with his Uncle Harry and cousins. He also enjoyed fishing and lobstering with his friends, Gerald Smith and Ed Hawkes. Most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three children; Richard G. Merrill and his wife, Lisa, of Sarasota, Fla., Joan E. Gambino and her husband, Richard of Falls Church, Va., and Gail A. Kobialka and her husband, Michael, of Marblehead; two brothers, Albert Merrill, of Danvers, and Howard B. Merrill and his wife, Carolyn, of Alfred, Maine; seven grandchildren, Matt Fogelgren and his wife, Kim, Michael Kobialka, Jenny Gambino, Jon Gambino, Nick Gambino and his wife, Callie, Lesley Merrill, Steven Jones and his, wife Liz, and three great-grandchildren, Ben, Will and Sam Fogelgren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Winifred Peabody and her husband, Warren, and his sister-in-law Jane Merrill.
ARRANGEMENTS: Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday May 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. Waterside Cemetery, 294 West Shore Dr., Marblehead, MA, 01945. Friends and family are welcome.
