Salem, MA — Margaret (Rice) Benedict, age 93, former wife of Doig R. Benedict, of Salem, Mass., formerly of South Woodstock, Vt., and Bellows Falls, Vt., died early Wednesday morning, May 1, 2013, in the Grosvenor Park Nursing Center.
Born in Hartland, Vt., the daughter of the late Frederick L. Rice and Emma (Breid) Rice, she was raised on the family farm in South Woodstock, Vt.
She graduated from Woodstock High School in 1937.
After raising her four daughters she became a beautician, owned and operated Margaret's Beauty Salon in North Walpole, N.H. 12 years later she sold her business and relocated to Salem, Mass., in 1986. While living in Salem, she was a volunteer at North Shore Children's Hospital for many years.
Mrs. Benedict is survived by four daughters, Louise Haley and her husband, Robert of Marblehead, Mass., Elizabeth Hart and her husband, James of Webster, Pa., Jean Benedict of Springfield, Vt., and Ruth Keefe and her husband, Terrence of Bellows Falls, Vt.; and eight grandchildren, Nancy Rhoades, Denise, Brian and Diane Hart, Robert B. Haley, Anne Laghetto, Michael and Marianne Keefe.
She had 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Kevin Hart; two brothers, Edwin F. Rice and Walter E. Rice; a sister, Marie M. Rice.
