Peabody — Mr. Edward Taylor Francis, 95, of Peabody, beloved husband of the late Marilyn Gasparini Francis, died peacefully on July 29, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Brooksby Village Continuing Care.
Born in Camden, N.J., Edward was the son of the late Howard R. and Anna Mae (Schellenger) Francis. He was raised and educated in Cranford and Bloomfield, N.J. He was a graduate of Bloomfield High School and Newark College of Engineering (NJIT).
Edward honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army during WWII where he served in the European Theater of Operations in Anti-Aircraft Artillery. He was promoted to the rank of Captain.
Mr. Francis was employed as an engineer by Public Service Electric & Gas Company of New Jersey for over 43 years prior to his well-deserved retirement in 1983. He worked at many of the generating stations and ultimately served as the Assistant Superintendent of Hudson Generating Station.
Edward was a lifelong railroad and transportation enthusiast and photographer. Mr. Francis loved to travel by train throughout the world, as well as remaining very active in various railroad organizations. He was a 76 year member of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) and a founder of the North Jersey Chapter. He was a life member of Arthur E. Smith Post 2856 VFW in Livingston, N.J., as well as a member of the Friends of New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center since its beginning, and the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians.
Mr. Francis belonged to the parish of Christ Church – Episcopal in Short Hills, N.J. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed.
Edward is survived by his two daughters, Katherine H. Lewis and her husband, Robert J., of Portsmouth, N.H., and Pamela F. Wilson and her husband, John R., of Danvers; his sister, Doris F. Gerber of Columbus, Miss.; his nieces and nephews, including fellow train enthusiast, Philip D. Francis of Ridgewood, N.J.; and his grandchildren, Philip J. Lewis, Geoffrey T. Lewis and his wife, Corey, Jacqueline R. Caron and her husband, Christopher, Edward I. Wilson, and Douglas T. Wilson; and his five great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Walter H. Francis and Howard R. Francis.
ARRANGEMENTS: The memorial service, which will be held in the Chapel at Brooksby Village, Brooksby Village Drive, Peabody, Sunday, August 11, 2013, and the burial are private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Danvers.
