Ruth (LaCroix) Darling, 90


Swampscott, Massachusetts — Ruth LaCroix Darling, 90, of Swampscott, MA, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, in Salem, MA.

She was the beloved wife of Nelson J. Darling Jr., with whom she shared 64 years of marriage. She was the loving mother to William Darling and his wife Elizabeth Breuhaus of Marblehead, MA, Esther Mulroy and her husband Michael of Marblehead, MA, Sarah Pruett and her husband Bob of Swampscott, MA, Thomas Darling and his wife Jillian of Lincoln, MA, and Jeannette McGinn and her husband, Peter of Peabody, MA, and her daughter-in-law Kathy Darling Walker of St. Louis, MO.

She was very proud of her grandchildren, Becky, Ben, Julia and Charlie Darling, Katie Norton and her husband Matt and Conor, Thomas and Robert Mulroy, Walker Pruett and his wife Madeline, Amy, Nick and Jena Pruett, Lia Darling and Anna, Morris, Daniel and Lydia McGinn.

She also leaves her sisters Jeanne Crocker of Wenham, MA, Susanne Phippen and her husband Richard of Wenham, MA, and Teedy Dabney and her husband Lewis of Chestnut Hill, MA, as well as her sister-in-law Phyllis White and her husband Mills of Pampa, TX, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother William LaCroix, her son Morris Darling and her grandson Samuel Darling.

Born June 23, 1922, at home in Swampscott, MA. She was the daughter of the late Morris F. and Esther (Paine) LaCroix. She graduated from St. Mary’s in the Mountains (The White Mountain School) in NH and Bennett College, NY. During World War II, she served in the United States Navy (WAVES) and was posted to the Eastern Seaboard Frontier (NYC). She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn. She volunteered and supported many local organizations both in Lynn and Boston, including Family and Children’s Service of Greater Lynn, Girls, Inc. and Ruth Darling Day Care in Dorchester. She enjoyed music both in church and at the Boston Symphony. She loved walks on the beach and was an avid outdoors woman, enjoying hiking, fishing, gardening and tennis, as well as a supporter of the environment. She had a passion for travel. It was a rare person who could beat her at cards. She was a real competitor and an intergenerational friend to many.

ARRANGEMENTS: Friends and family are kindly invited to attend her memorial service to take place on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 11am, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn, 101 Forest Avenue, Swampscott, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ruth Darling’s name can be made to a charity of your choice.
