Joao S. "John" Ortins, 80


Peabody — Joao S. “John” Ortins, age 80, husband of Odelta (Bettencourt) Ortins, died at home early Sunday morning, September 30, 2012, after a long term illness.

Born on the Island of Graciosa in Azores Portugal, the son of the late Manuel Acurcio and Olivia do Sacramento Ortins, he attended local schools and also helped to care for his sister in his younger years.

At an early age, Mr. Ortins developed a lifelong passion for music and learned to play both the trumpet and saxophone.

Mr. Ortins emigrated to the United States, settling in Peabody, and became employed by Maynard Plastics. Mr. Ortins became active in the community and was one of the founding members of the Banda Recreativa, a marching band that performed all over the U.S. and Portugal. He was an active member of Our Lady of Help, Holy Ghost Society and CLC. A former council member and active parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody.

A loving father who also helped raise his grandchildren, Mr. Ortins is also survived by a daughter, Denise Ortins of Peabody, a son-in-law, John Felizardo of Florida, two grandchildren, Alison and Felicia Felizardo; a brother, Eleuterio Ortins (deceased), and a sister Maria Anunciacao Silva of Portugal.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 8 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (corner of North St.) Salem, Mass., to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody, Mass. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem, Mass.
