Mary Nora Burke, 96


BEVERLY — Mary Nora Burke, 96, of 9 Munroe Street, where she was born, raised and lived in for 95 years, passed away peacefully on March 12, at Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Beverly. She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Flynn) Burke.

Mary attended Beverly Schools and graduated from Hawthorne Business Institute in 1937. She was employed at the House of Seven Gables in Salem as the assistant director for 48 years. Mary was a member of the Gables Settlement Association, the Beverly Historical Society, the Lothrop Club and the Girdler House. She traveled many times to Ireland and enjoyed most of all visiting her beloved Irish relatives in County Waterford.

In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, volunteering and completed the Burke Genealogy. Mary was also a very active and dedicated member at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parish until she was no longer able to attend. Her family and close friends would like to extend a sincere thank you to her caregivers who came to her home and those at the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their kindness, support and excellent care.

Mary leaves behind her cousin, Mr. Steven Surette, many dear friends and neighbors and her treasured relatives in Ireland. She was predeceased by her brother, John Burke Jr. and her sister, Helen Burke.

ARRANGEMENTS: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parish, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, on Monday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will take place prior to the Mass at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Downtown Beverly, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly. Memorial donations may be made in Mary’s memory to the House of Seven Gables, 115 Derby St., Salem, MA 01970 or to the North East Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
