Beverly — Charlotte B. (Leighton) Shai, 87, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 27, 2014, with family by her side, at Beverly Hospital. She was wife of the late Joseph F. Shai, whom she shared 32 loving years of marriage.
Born in Cherryfield, Maine, on February 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harry G. and Marian (Robbins) Leighton.
In her early teens, she lost her eyesight, and resided at Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown, Mass. She regained her eyesight and proceeded to graduate from Narraguagus High School in Cherryfield, Maine. She resided in Beverly at Turtle Creek for the last 23 years, where she had many dear friends.
Charlotte is survived by her loving children, Casimir “Ed” Widomski of Hobe Sound, Fla., Joseph S. Shai and his wife, Diane, of Chelsea, Brenda Digby of Palm Coast, Fla., David Shai and his wife, Christine, of Peabody; eight grandchildren, William Widomski, Adam Widomski, David Widomski, Caroline (Digby) McNeil, Kevin Digby, Joe Digby, Michael Shai, and Allie Shai; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Carroll “Kayo” Leighton of Glenburn, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her two sons, William and Joseph Widomski; her son-in-law, Patrick Digby; three sisters; and eight brothers.
ARRANGEMENTS: The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a service to follow at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be held privately in Highland Cemetery, Limerick, Maine.
