Beverly — Evelyn M. Smith, 78, died peacefully at her home on March 29, 2014, surrounded by the love and support of her family. Evelyn was the beloved wife of Joseph T. Smith Jr., with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. She was the devoted mother to son, James J Smith and his wife, Kim Highland of Seattle, Wash., and daughter, Carolyn M Gourdeau and her husband, Glenn Gourdeau of Beverly, Mass. She was an extremely proud grandmother of her three grandchildren, Jack, Samuel and Eva Gourdeau. She is survived by her sisters, Marian Stegner of Jacksonville, Fla., and Margaret Laschi of Cliffwood, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was born in Trenton, N.J., and graduated from Orange High School in Orange, N.J. She moved to Massachusetts in 1974, and fell in love with Boston and the New England Coastline. She loved to travel, take photos, watch the Red Sox, and spend time with family.
She worked for the telephone company for over 37 years, starting out as an operator for New Jersey Bell and working as a secretary in Boston before she retired. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 111 New Balch St., Beverly, on Friday, April 4, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell–Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, North Beverly, will be onThursday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
