Gertrude E. York, 95

BEVERLY — Gertrude (Henley) York, 95, wife of the late Howard Russell York, with whom she shared 53 happy years of marriage, died Wednesday, April 2, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House.

Born in Ipswich, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mabel (Howe) Henley. She was raised in Ipswich after her mother died by Gladys Woodman who also had a daughter, Carol (Harris) Livingston and a son, Stephen Woodman. She was raised in Ipswich and received her education in the Ipswich School system. She was a member of the graduating class of 1937. Gertrude attended the Salem Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as an LPN. Upon graduation, she worked at North Shore Babies Hospital for many years until her retirement.

After her children were born, she worked nights in the nursery at Salem Hospital until she retired and became a nanny for many years. Gertrude was also a loving foster mother for many children.

She was a Girl Scout Leader, and volunteer for the Centerville Improvement Society, and an active member of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Beverly.

Gertrude enjoyed backyard barbecues with her family and neighbors, traveling to such places as Hawaii and Alaska and cruises to the Caribbean. She also enjoyed bowling into her 90s with the Senior Citizen’s League and playing bingo.

Gertrude was a 58 year resident of Grover Street and most recently lived at Turtle Creek where she enjoyed the fellowship of many Beverly friends and the activities provided by the facility.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Vitale and her husband, Jerry C., of Beverly and was the mother of the late Judith Gray and her husband, Glenn Gray, of Beverly; three grandchildren, Joanne (Gray) Gilbert, Susan (Gray) Newell and Ty Vitale; two great-grandchildren, Adam Gray and Amanda Gilbert and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson, David Gray and all of her brothers and sisters, Marion Bagley, Katherine Mello, Mildred Lettau, Beatrice Burbank, Thomas Henley, Lawrence Henley, C. Edward Henley and Clarence Henley.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell-Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Downtown Beverly, on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. A Funeral Service will immediately follow the visitation at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
