Evelyn C. Evans

Danvers & Peabody, MA — Evelyn C. Evans, a longtime North Shore resident, passed away peacefully March 30, at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody.

Evelyn was the devoted daughter of Emile and Elizabeth Deschenes of Danvers. She was born in Salem on May 15, 1930, the eldest of three daughters (sisters, Kathleen and Priscilla). The family moved to Danvers when she was 11, and she graduated from Danvers High School. She attended Shenandoah College in Virginia, where she met Robert Evans of Cumberland, Maryland. They were married in 1951, in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Danvers, and they remained happily married for 61 years. At first, they lived in Virginia and Maine, where Bob taught music. They then moved to the North Shore, first to Salem, then to Beverly, where they lived on Sunset Drive for more than 40 years. In 2008, they moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody. After her beloved husband, Bob, passed away in early 2013, Evelyn was a resident at the Rosewood Nursing Home.

Early on, Evelyn worked at Solid State in Salem. Later, after her sons were grown, she worked for many years at the Danvers Savings Bank. She played basketball in high school, played tennis throughout her life, and loved to dance. She was an avid reader, putting the Beverly Library bookmobile to the test each week. She kept in touch with friends from every stage of her life, delighting in catching up at class reunions. She organized travel adventures with Bob around the country and overseas, often with her sisters, Bob’s brothers and sister, and their families. They cherished their Beverly neighborhood and neighbors. She was a constant source of loving support as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend.

Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Larry Evans of Beverly and Michael Evans of Cheverly, Maryland; by her grandchildren, Thomas Evans, Jennifer Catherall, Joseph Evans, Sean Evans, Aselefech Evans, Adanech Evans, and Christopher Evans; by her great-granddaughter, Zariyah Quiroz; by her daughter-in-law, Maureen Evans; by her sisters, Kathleen Stratoti and Priscilla Sherman; and by many nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours on Friday in the Mackey Funeral Home, Danvers, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Danvers. Please see www.mackeyfuneralhome.com to leave a condolence.
