Frances Margaret Isabel (Noseworthy) Barclay

Danvers — Frances was born on December 26, 1917 in Chateauguy, Quebec, Canada, a suburb of Montreal. She was the youngest of six children of the late Frederick and Ella (Angel) Noseworthy. Siblings were Bernice Noseworthy, Frederick Noseworthy, Phyllis (Noseworthy) Daley, Eric Noseworthy, Freda (Noseworthy) Gettman, all deceased. In the early 1920s, the Noseworthy’s moved to Malden, Mass., where Frances grew up and graduated from Malden High School. The Noseworthy’s were a family of athletes, her two older brothers being professional skaters in their youth. Their father, Frederick, was a scout and coach for the Montreal Canadiens, as well as the early Boston Bruins teams in the 1920s. He helped establish the Bruins club by scouting and bringing down players from his native Canada to play for the team.

Frances led an active social life throughout her lifetime. She was an avid skier, golfer and tennis player, as well as an accomplished artist, clothing designer and seamstress. Frances was a pioneer for her time, a single woman running her own ski and golf apparel design business in the 1950s, not an easy feat. “Dress to a “T” in a Fran Noseworthy!” was her label. It was through this business connection to the golf industry that she met her second husband, the late William Crawford Barclay, a member of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and head golf professional at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Mass., for over 37 years.

Frances became stepmother to Bill’s three children from a previous marriage, twin teenage girls, Jean Ann (Barclay) Funderburg of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Patricia Louise (Barclay) Welze of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and younger stepson, Robert Luman Barclay of Green Cove Springs, Fla. The family lived in Melrose, Mass., for many years and this is where Frances own son, William Kent Barclay of Beverly, Mass., was born. Frances also had a grandson, William Preston Barclay of North Andover, Mass., by son, Kent; as well as stepgrandchildren, David Barclay and Brian Barclay, by stepson, Bob Barclay; Patty Welze, Lisa (Welze) Goumet and Ritchie Welze, by step-daughter Pat; nephew, Frederick Noseworthy Jr. and niece, Lee (Noseworthy) Williams, of brother Frederick Noseworthy; and nephew, George Gettman, and the late Linda (Gettman) Doyle, of sister Freda Gettman. There are several stepgrandchildren and grandnieces and nephews on both the Noseworthy and Barclay side.

Fran will be remembered as a strong-willed woman, who strived to get the most out of life. She loved to have fun while accomplishing a great many things in her lifetime.
