Donald M. Hyde, 66

Rockport, MA — Donald M. Hyde, 66, husband of Anne D. (Sproul) Hyde, passed away at his Rockport home on Thursday, August 29, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family. Born in Salem, son of the late Alister N. D. and Elaine A. (Bennett) Hyde of Ipswich, he graduated from Ipswich High School in 1965, Dean Junior College in 1967, and Emerson College in 1969.

Don worked for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York in Syracuse, N.Y., for 32 years. He enjoyed working with his colleagues in the investigation of life insurance claims involving disappearance, fraud, and homicide, and retired in 2001 as Director of Claims. He had forensic medicine training at St. Louis University Medical School and the Miami/Dade County Medical Examiners Office, was a guest lecturer at insurance claim conferences, and earned the designation of Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Scientists.

He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 20 years at Labrador Mountain in Truxton, N.Y. He held a variety of officer positions including Patrol Director, and received a National Appointment, the highest honor bestowed upon a ski patroller. Don often said that these were some of the happiest times of his life.

Following retirement from MONY he moved to Rockport and studied the art of classical American and English furniture making at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, then operated a custom furniture business from his home.

He very much enjoyed his association with a group of friends each morning at the local coffee shop in Rockport. They were a tremendous source of support and friendship. He was also especially appreciative of his oncology team at Massachusetts General Hospital. He will be missed by his family and wonderful friends.

In addition to his wife, Anne, he is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Falise and her husband, Ron, of Syracuse, N.Y.; Rebecca von Barta and her husband, Rence, of Swampscott; his grandchildren, Jessica Peterson, John and Keir von Barta; his brothers, Jeffrey Hyde and his wife, Marlene, of Essex, and Robert Hyde and his wife, Jean, of Ipswich; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Marsha Hyde.
