Joseph R. Girard


Peabody, MA — Mr. Joseph R. Girard, age 83, formerly of Peabody, died Wednesday, Sept. 4 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Virginia M. (Sanford) Girard, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ernestine (LaPointe) Girard. Joe served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He received an honorable discharge as a corporal in July of 1953. He was a paratrooper and completed airborne training in 1950. He received a Bronze Star as a Private, 1st class for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in 1952, along with the Purple Heart and many other badges. Joe was a Union Carpenter for 30 years. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Valladolid Council #70, Lynn. He loved fishing and hunting.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Darlene M. Girard of Idaho; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert J. and Sheila Girard of Middleton, Charles J. and Cheryl Girard of Idaho; as well as three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He also had several brothers and sisters.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 (9:30 a.m.) in the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home, 426 Broadway, (Route 129), Lynn. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday, Sept. 13 (2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.). Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, we would like to honor Veterans under the “Joseph Girard Scholarship Fund” at North Shore Community College. We believe that this scholarship would honor him and honor Veterans of the future.
