Marblehead — Mr. William J. “Bill” Pruyn, 91, of Marblehead, died peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, Salem. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William and Ida (Peterson) Pruyn.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Bill was an accomplished businessman who worked for Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and served as chief executive officer. He served on many boards, including the New England Aquarium and Northeastern University.
Bill was also an avid yachtsman, racing his many sailboats along the coast of New England. For several years he served as the Commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, where he was a member for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary A. (Anton) Pruyn; and his children, William J. Pruyn Jr. and his wife, Kathy, Barbara Wade and her husband, Tom, Ann Marie Pruyn, and Stephen Pruyn; and was the father of the late Christopher J. Pruyn and Marilyn Pruyn. He also leaves 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., in the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead, followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady, Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Waterside Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
