DANVERS — Joyce (Dulgarian) Swedberg, of Danvers, Mass., passed away of lung cancer on December 3, 2013, surrounded by her family, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, Mass. She was the wife of Steven Craig Swedberg, with whom she shared 31 years of marriage.
Born March 21, 1957, in Providence, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Earl Dulgarian and the late Beatrice (Nargizian) Dulgarian. Joyce grew up in Rhode Island. She is a 1975 graduate of Cranston High School West, after which she received a bachelor's degree in special education from Syracuse University in 1979. She continued her education at Boston University, where she received a master's degree in education in special education and elementary education in 1980.
Joyce’s passion was teaching. She will be remembered for the impact she made on her students in special education, many of whom attribute their current success to her patience, persistence and skill. Her winning of the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award is just a small indicator of the difference she made in their lives. She was a role model and mentor to her fellow teachers for more than 30 years, and was known as one of the most skilled professionals in her field. She spent most of her teaching years in the Manchester Essex Regional School District.
When she wasn’t devoting time to her students, Joyce enjoyed playing classical piano, making creations for her classroom, and spending time with her family. Her friends will remember her as a great listener with a wonderful sense of humor, often finding ways to make people laugh, even during difficult times. She was the best dance partner and movie companion her husband could have asked for. She attended The North Shore Community Baptist Church in Beverly, Mass.
Besides her devoted and loving husband, Steven, she leaves her dear son, Scott S. Swedberg of Danvers; and her mother-in-law, Shirley A. Swedberg of Westminster, Mass. Joyce also leaves three brothers, Robert E. and his wife, Janis, of Cumberland, R.I., Richard K. of Cranston, R.I., her twin brother, Kenneth R. and his wife, Gretchen, of Providence, and their three children, Madison, Morgan, and Harrison Dulgarian. She leaves a loving, extended family and will be dearly missed by her family, friends and colleagues.
