Martha M. Murray, 93

Beverly, MA — Martha Mary (Daley) Murray was born in Abington, MA to Elmira (Golkey) & Patrick Joseph Daley who was a fireman. The family later moved nearer both of her grandparents in Brockton, MA.

America’s “Depression Era” deeply affected Martha as she never forgot the hardships it inflicted on families. Martha and her sisters (Doris & Margaret) become RNs at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, her brother John became a U.S. Navy lawyer. Martha would later regale her children, retelling her times in Norwood Hospital’s O.R. Martha joined the U.S. Army during WWII and later worked in the V.A. hospital in Togas, Maine, where she met & later married her husband/patient Army Master Sgt. Joseph Anthony Murray of Lewiston, ME. Martha & Joe began their family in Portland, ME & later on Cape Cod before settling in Beverly’s Ryal Side. Martha temporarily put her nursing career on hold while she enjoyed raising her children and being a Brownie & Girl Scout leader. Later Martha enjoyed returning to school at Essex Aggie & Lowell State to regain her nursing accreditation and continued her nursing career throughout the North Shore.

Martha & Joe retired to Florida in the late 70’s where they both took up golf at the Bird Bay Golf Club & socialized at the Venice Yacht Club. Thanks to help of their many friends (especially Jean & Jerome Jankowski) Martha was able to continue thriving in Florida after losing her husband Joe in the mid 80’s. Martha joined the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Elderhostel, Florida’s Democratic State Committee & Hillary Clinton’s fan club. Eventually Martha did move back to Beverly to live with her growing family. Martha made new friends, especially at Bingo and she enjoyed many trips with her family and Beverly’s Council On Aging. Martha got lots of loving assistance from her family, especially from her extraordinarily loving daughter-in-law Diana, all the great people at Spectrum in Beverly, the Hannah unit at Essex Park in Beverly, the great doctors, nurses & staff at Lahey Clinic, Beverly Hospital & the Kaplan Family Hospice House.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Gail Murray, her two sons, Brian Murray, Kevin & his wife Diana Murray. Her grandchildren, Lisa & her husband Bruce Scudder & their daughters, Paige & Camille.
