Marblehead, MA — Bradlee M. Backman of Marblehead, Mass., and Hillsboro Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 86 on August 15, 2013. The son of Samuel and Rosa Backman, Brad was born on November 27, 1926. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1948 and Boston University School of Law in 1951. Brad was an Air Force Veteran of World War II. He was well known for his work at Backman Management in Lynn, Mass., where he practiced law and real estate managment. He was also very active during the Civil Rights Era. Brad was an avid athlete who enjoyed tennis, swimming, hiking and volleyball.
Brad is survived by his wife of 29 years, Grace Hayden Backman; children, Garett Backman of Atlanta, Ga., Jill Backman and husband, Bruce Nichols, of Kennebunk, Maine, Bruce Backman and husband, Edward Sullivan, of Kennebunkport, Maine, and Charles Backman and wife, Kate Brick, of Hampstead, N.H.; step-children, Joan Martino and husband, Robert Martino, of Beverly, Mass., Michael Driscoll of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Eileen Driscoll of Danvers, Mass., and Ellen Graham and husband, Roland Graham, of Danvers, Mass.; grandchildren, Sigrid, Gretchen, Piper, Peder, Lucy, Vera, Mabel, Ariella, Kristyn, Erin, Veronica, Hayden and Madeline; great-grandchild, Carter; and numerous friends and loved ones.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 28 Mugford St., Marblehead, MA at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
