Raymond L. Fontaine, 89


Peabody MA — Raymond L. Fontaine, 89, of Peabody, died Sunday at the Peabody Glenn Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Doris (Cunha) Fontaine. Ray was born in Peabody on September 10, 1923, and was the son of the late Charles and Ellen (Toomey) Fontaine. He was a lifelong Peabody resident. He had been employed in the calfskin division of the former A. C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Peabody for 37 years, prior to his retirement in 1986. He later worked at the Cut-Rite and Travel Leather Co. for six years. Ray was a veteran of WWII, serving with the U.S. Army in the Rhineland and Ardennes, before being discharged in 1945. He was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, serving as an usher and on many committees there.

He is survived by his cousins and many friends. He was the brother of the late Paul L. Fontaine and Charles E. Fontaine, who died in WWII, and brother-in-law of the late Marie Kerkorian, John, Anibal, and Joseph Cunha.

ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:15 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Peabody, at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
