Alvin J. Winant Sr., 90

Marblehead — Mr. Alvin J. Winant Sr., 90, of Marblehead, died peacefully amongst family and friends on July 6, 2013, at a local nursing home after a brief illness. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Alvin C. and Isabel (Douglas) Winant, and the husband of the late Lucy (Clark) Winant.

He graduated from Medway High School, and learned to fly single-prop airplanes at 16 years old, beginning a lifelong love of aviation. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII, flying in over 30 missions during his two tours of duty in Europe. He was awarded numerous medals, including the honored Purple Heart. After the war, he returned with his mother to her homeland of Australia where they stayed for several years before returning to the States. Attending Vespa George Art Academy in Boston on the GI bill, he met his wife, Lucy, and upon graduating began a career as an art director for advertising firms. The two would eventually settle and raise a family in Marblehead.

He was active in the Marblehead Arts Society for many years, and enjoyed supporting his wife, Lucy’s art career, as well as painting his own watercolors. He was also active in helping his children pursue their very diverse activities. Upon retiring, he traveled domestically and abroad to attend reunions of his 452nd Bomb Group.

He was the father of Alvin John Winant, Jr. of Sutton, Mass., Joshua T. Winant of Hillsborough, N.H., and Katherine I. Winant of Waterboro, Maine. He also leaves nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, July 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm St., Marblehead. A funeral service at 11 a.m., on Friday, July 12, also in the Eustis-Cornell Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are invited. A burial service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in West Medway, Mass., on a date to be announced later.
