Mary A. (Griffin) Lodge — formerly of So. Hamilton, and originally from the Aran Islands, Co. Galway, February 12, at age 92. Daughter of the late Agnes (Gill) and Michael Griffin. Beloved wife of the late Edward Lodge. Devoted mother of Maggie Lodge of Brookline; Liz Lodge and her husband Tom Gerhardt of Lincolnville, ME; and Larry Lodge of Sparks, NV. Loving grandmother of Madalina, Ionut, Tayler, and Brooke Lodge and Neil Rae.
Mary grew up on Inishmore in the Aran Islands and immigrated to Boston in 1938. She trained and practiced as an RN, before attending the Forsyth School for Dental Hygiene (Class of 1948) in Boston. Mary worked for the U.S. Dept. of Public Health in the first Massachusetts clinic to pioneer the use of fluoride. Many years later, she ran the Beadle School Dental Clinic for the Town of Beverly Public Health Department.
Mary and her husband resided for fifty years in South Hamilton. She was an avid walker, an active member of St. Paul’s parish, and, in retirement, enjoyed relaxing in the garden and daily excursions to local beaches with her husband, Eddie. While Alzheimer’s disease clouded Mary’s memory during her final years, it could not erase her sense of humor or her gracious spirit.
Mary will be remembered by all who love her for her strength and determination; for her devotion as a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother; and for her endless capacity and willingness to care for others.
