Helen (Orben) Croke, 101

Peabody — Helen (Orben) Croke, 101, beloved wife of the late William J. Croke, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday evening November 23, 2012, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, with the comforting presence of her faithful family by her side.

Born in North Reading, she was the daughter of the late William H. & Olive (Richardson) Orben. She was orphaned early in life, and grew up in Sutton where she attended schools.

Mrs. Croke had a special gift for nurturing people, and always dreamed of becoming a nurse. She enjoyed taking care of people and was devoted to her husband with his medical conditions later in life.

She was working as a Housekeeper at the New England Sanitarium in Middleton where she met her husband. She also worked at The Champion Drug Store and GTE Sylvania for years.

Helen enjoyed gardening, and spending time with family. She was a very devoted member of the St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody.

She is survived by her daughters, Marie Susan Croke of Peabody and Margaret & her husband Albert LeVasseur of Danvers, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister, Raymond Orben, Richard Orben, Oliver Orben, Frederick Orben, and Sarah Rinaldi.

ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at 10 AM from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. She was raised in Lynn and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Girls High School and she attended Boston University. She had lived in Lynn most of her life.

    Beverly — Marguerite M. “Peggy” (Scahill) Watson, age 96, died Wednesday morning, July 23, 2014 at the Ledgewood Nursing and Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly. Born in Peabody, Marguerite was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Agnes B. (Wynne) Scahill. She was raised in Peabody and attended St. Johns Elementary School and graduated from St. John’s Girls High School in the class of 1935. She had received all of her sacraments at St. John’s Church in Peabody.

    Peabody, MA — Mary T. (Sullivan) Allen, 93, of South Peabody, died peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 with her family at her side. She was the wife of the late James E. Allen. She was born in Somerville, Mass. on Dec. 26, 1920, the daughter of the late Michael and Bridget (Hickey) Sullivan and was raised and educated there. After her marriage, she and her husband had resided in Arlington, Mass. and Hamden, Conn., before moving to Peabody 48 years ago. She had worked in her earlier years as a comptometer for First National Stores in Somerville. Mary loved to cook and the family enjoyed her famous clam dip. She also traveled with her husband and enjoyed playing Bridge and other card games. In her healthier years, she was a devout communicant of St. Ann’s Church.

Weeden, with whom she had shared 53 years of marriage. Born in Revere, Mass., on April 18, 1936, she was the daughter of the late and beloved Sophia and Edward Makosky of Revere. Mrs. Weeden was the dearly loved mother of her daughter, Diane Weeden; three sons, Billy, Michael and Timothy Weeden; devoted grandmother of Stephen and Stacy Weeden; sister of Mr. Jan Makosky and his wife, Donna, of Winthrop. Our beloved Mom Hedy Weeden leaves behind a very large group of extended family and friends, too numerous to mention.

She is predeceased by her husband, Leo Slam; and her daughter, Susan. Her son, Russell Slam and her daughter-in-law, Trish, have lived in Salem for the past 38 years. Lee is also survived by six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    Edwardsville, Pa — Leo Joseph Mahan, 70, husband of Gertrude S. (Gibbons) Mahan, died Monday July 14, 2014, at his home. Born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph V. and Josephine (Gillis) Mahan. He was raised and educated in Swampscott, and graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School, Class of 1962. Following high school, Mr. Mahan attended Merrimac College and Boston College before entering the United States Coast Guard. He served his country for nine years, working in radio operations and communications.
