Salem — Leroy D. “Bo” Briggs Sr., 89, of Salem, passed away Tuesday December 4, 2012, at Colonial Gardens, Beverly, following a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Hilda (Guy) Briggs with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.
Born and educated in Salem he was the son of the late Elmer and Marion (Roche) Briggs, a graduate of Salem High School, Class of 1940 and a lifelong resident of the city. Bo enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December of 1941 and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He received several medals and attained the rank of Boatswain's Mate Second Class prior to his discharge in November 1945. After returning home from the war, together with his wife Hilda, they raised their family. Bo began a career at the United States Postal Service as a postal carrier in Salem and retired after 31 years of dedicated service.
Surviving him in addition to his wife Hilda, is a son Leroy D. Briggs Jr. of Lynn; two daughters, Shirley Sweeney of Swampscott, Janet Lettich and her husband Mark of Danvers; two brothers, George Briggs of Saugus, Henry Briggs of Texas; a sister, Frances Gilday of Danvers formerly of Beverly; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Linda M. Briggs.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held in the David H. Gonet Funeral Home, 22 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem, on Friday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends invited.
