Marblehead — Montgomery “Monty” Farrington, 98, of Marblehead, passed away at his home on December 11, 2012. He was the husband of the late Virginia “Jayne” (Ingalls) Farrington with whom he shared 65 years of marriage.
Raised in Marblehead, Monty was a graduate of Marblehead High School, class of 1931. He then attended Bates College in Maine and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1936. He worked as a procedure analyst for the General Electric Company in Lynn for many years.
At the age of 29 in June of 1944, he was a cryptographer for the 3250th Signal Service Co. The company was in charge of communications for Fifth Corps, one of the two Army corps slated to attack Normandy on June 6. Due to choppy seas in the afternoon, his company’s landing on Omaha Beach was put on hold until the next day. After Normandy, he participated in the liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, and was assigned to General George S. Patton’s Third Army. He ended the war outside of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. Mr. Farrington’s unit had one of the highest casualty rates among communications platoons in the Army.
Monty was a manager, and served as past President of Marblehead Little League for several years. He was also a member of the Philanthropic Masonic Lodge and VFW Post 2005 both in Marblehead.
He is survived by two children, Dave Farrington, and Diane Farrington both of Marblehead; his grandson, Shane Farrington and his wife Grace; and three great-granddaughters, Kalie, Khyra, and Kiana all of Oklahoma.
