Salem — Mrs. Barbara Ann (Queenan) Riley, 62, of Salem, beloved wife of Mark Joseph Riley, retired City of Salem Police Officer, died January 3rd, 2013, following a remarkable battle with cancer, bravely–fought with an abundant passion for life that impressed even her doctors and caregivers.
Born in Beverly, Barbara was a devoted daughter of the late John F. and Winifred (Carroll) Queenan. Barbara was raised and educated in Salem, graduating from Salem High School and later continuing her education at North Shore Community College.
Barbara was first employed as a mail clerk, at the former Holyoke Insurance Company of Salem, thereafter, Barbara was not just a hard-working, dedicated employee of Wayne Alarm Systems in Lynn, but was truly instrumental in building the business from the ground up. Barbara was with Wayne Alarm Systems for more than twenty-five years as Office Manager until her recent illness. She was a longtime member of the Lynn Chamber of Commerce and the North Shore Chamber of Commerce.
Barbara, a caring, generous "people-person," was dedicated not only to her family but her profession and community as well. When someone was in need, or something needed to be done — Barbara would gladly be there, with tenacity and resolve for the task at hand. Barbara, in her quiet, reserved manner, loathed being the center of attention and desired no recognition for her accomplishments — no matter how momentous. Barbara shared forty-four years of marriage with her devoted, loving husband Mark, who cherished her more than words can define. Barbara’s love for her family was boundless. She was an extraordinary hostess of countless family holidays and celebrations — no small feat given her extensive, loving family. Barbara shall always be remembered for her beautiful smile, and unwavering devotion, to her family, her friends and even strangers in need. Her caring, generous heart of gold could always be seen in her sparkling Irish eyes.
