Murray W. Obear, 89


BEVERLY — Murray W. Obear, 89, beloved husband of the late Jane (Davidson) Obear, died Friday, January 25 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol, Rhode Island. Born in Salem on February 14, 1923, he was the son of the late Murray E. and Bertha (Gates) Obear.

Murray grew up in Beverly and was a graduate of Beverly High School, class of 1941. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. For many years, Murray worked as a machinist for the Western Electric Company in North Andover until he retired at age 62. Murray's hobbies were fishing, sailing, and flying his Cessna 172. He was especially proud of the award he received in 2009 from the Federal Aviation Administration for "Fifty Years of Dedicated Service in Aviation Safety" (accident-free flying, 1944 to 1994). He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. He was also a member of Aleppo Shrine, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Freemason, and a member of Liberty Lodge in Beverly. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Wenham.

He is survived by one son: Scott Obear and his wife Melanie of Nashua, NH; two daughters: Linda Kimball of Katy, TX and Judith Gessler and her husband Robert of Portsmouth, RI; two grandchildren: Major James Towle, U.S. Army, of Georgetown, TX and Kelly Parkes and her husband Andrew of Wellingborough, England; and two great-grandchildren: Sean Murray Parkes and Albany Eileen Parkes of Wellingborough, England. He is predeceased by his brother Benjamin L. Obear.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly Location) on Thursday, February 14 from 10 to 11 A.M., followed by a funeral service at the home at 11 A.M. Burial will be in the North Beverly Cemetery.
