Dorothy Alice (Doerr) Maxner, 93

West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard — Dorothy Alice (Doerr) Maxner died peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 9, 2012. She was 93. She was the wife of the late John H. Maxner.

Dottie, as she was called by her many friends, was born in Methuen on December 9, 1919. voted "student who has done the most for the school," Dottie was described in her high school yearbook as possessing a vibrant, fun-loving nature and pleasing manner. Vice president of her class, cheerleader and class prophet were but a few of her many early accomplishments.

After graduating first in her class from nursing school, Dottie juggled the many challenges of raising a large family with the joys of serving others in her capacity as a registered nurse. Her sense of wit, intelligence and humor would become staples of her inner strength as she overcame the many difficult struggles associated with raising a developmentally disabled daughter.

She was frugal, generous, a good friend and a hard worker who remained strong and determined throughout her life. A loving wife and mother of six children, Dottie was a kind and gentle spirit who inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was fond of saying "deeds are the true proof of worth." Her remarkable journey is a living testimony to the importance of persevering in the face of seemingly insurmountable and unforeseen obstacles encountered along the road of life. During the last months of her life, she became a knowledgeable birder and seasoned connoisseur of lobster rolls and fried oysters.

Dorothy is survived by her six children, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
