Marblehead — Janis Lee (Chartier) Monahan, age 85, wife of Karl Monahan of Marblehead, died unexpectedly on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at her home in Marblehead.
Born in Salem, the daughter of the late Emile and Helen (Cuthbert) Chartier, she was educated in local schools. Mrs. Monahan was a graduate of the first class of Radiology (X-Ray) technicians at Salem Hospital (North Shore Medical Center) Salem.
A devoted and loving wife and mother, she enjoyed gardening, reading and knitting.
A devout parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Marblehead, Mrs. Monahan was deeply loved by her family and friends for her sweet and loving nature as well as her kindness and generosity.
In addition to her dear husband, Karl, Mrs. Monahan is survived by three daughters, Maryellen McCarthy of Tamworth, NH, Martha Monahan and her husband Barry Skoff of Lynnfield, and Kristin Monahan of Marblehead. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Karl Monahan, Jr. She leaves her loving sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Monahan, Doris Meehan and Elizabeth Chartier. She will be deeply missed by her five grandchildren; Emily Skoff, Colin McCarthy, Amelia McCarthy, Moira McCarthy and Jennifer Monahan, and her three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Lucy and Finnegan Karl.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11 AM in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm at the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem, MA.
