Paul Thomas Shortell, 82
formally of Salem — Paul Thomas Shortell, husband of Mary Cosgrove Stark Shortell of Santa Monica, Calif., was the son of the late Albert Vincent Shortell and Ruth Elizabeth Donovan of Salem. Born in Manchester, N.H., he attended Salem, Mass., schools. Following his graduation from Salem High School in 1949, where he was a class officer, he attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. In 1952, he obtained a bachelor of science degree in Marine Transportation, a USCG Third Mate's license, and was commissioned as an ensign, USNR.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Rosanne Patuleia; a son, John Anthony Cronin and his wife, Courtney, of Andover, N.H.; daughters, Christina Patuleia of Peabody, Mass., Sarah and Stephanie Patuleia of Andover, N.H.; three grandchildren, Olivia M. Glines, Xavier M. Gebo, and Zackary R. Vadeboncoeur all of Andover, N.H.; two brothers, Joseph Patuleia of Marblehead, Mass., and John Patuleia of Wells, Maine; three sisters, Ana Ortins of Peabody, Mass., Teresa Lobb of Oxford, Maine, Rosemarie Provencher of Groveland, Mass.; longtime friend Jose Varela; several brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Danvers — Mrs. Virginia Merrill MacLeod, 85, born in Boston, died May 30, 2013. She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, John Norman MacLeod of Danvers. She will be deeply missed by her four children and their spouses; Merrill M. Baldwin (William R. III) of Richmond, Va.; Pamela M. Barnard (Herbert T. Jr.) of Lancaster, Penn., Robin M. Goodridge (Alan A.) of Boxford, Mass., and Scott C. MacLeod (Gioia D.) of Danvers; her 10 grandchildren, who adored their “Gigi,” are Andrew M. Baldwin, Mrs. Heather B. Ross (Jeremy), Sgt. Douglas F. Baldwin (Jaime), all of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Lindsay B. O’Neil (Brendan) of Greenfield, Mass., Christopher C. Barnard and Stephanie C. Barnard of Rockville, Md.; Meredith L. Goodridge and Courtney A. Goodridge of Boxford, Mass., and Alexander I. and Cameron S. MacLeod of Danvers.; great-grandchildren, Bradford and Warren Ross, and Norah O’Neil. Two more great-grandchildren are expected in October. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Madeline E. Luca, 85
Beverly — Madeline E. (Williams) Luca passed away on Wednesday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, she was 85. Born in Roxbury, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Dorothy (Powers) Williams. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Luca. A young widow, Madeline devoted her life to raising and caring for her three daughters; and later their families. A longtime Beverly resident, Madeline was retired from the Beverly School System where she served as a lunch lady. Known as a great cook, she also enjoyed making Italian cookies that she would provide to the Beverly Police and Fire Departments over many years. Madeline also enjoyed her time volunteering at the North Shore Music Theater. Above all she enjoyed time spent with her family and grandchildren.

Salem & Danvers — Mrs. Olga M. (Gilberti) Wanyo, 93, died Thursday evening at Salem Hospital in Salem. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Wanyo, Sr. Born and raised in Chelsea, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Adelaide (Lepore) Gilberti and lived in Revere until 1970 when she moved to Salem. For the past five years she lived at Emeritus at Cherry Hill Assisted Living in Danvers.

Born and raised in Peabody, Mass., he served honorably in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he spent time on the Ice Breaker USS Atka in the Antarctic; one of his fondest memories was of playing with the penguins on the ice. -

Peabody, MA — Dwayne W. Welch, 73, of Peabody, died May 29 in Danvers. Born in Holden, Maine on December 9, 1939, the son of the late Max and Marion (Carmichael) Welch. Mr. Welch was raised in Topsfield and a graduate of Topsfield High School where he was captain of the football team. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired Master Craftsman from Osram Sylvania of Danvers. Mr. Welch was also an avid golfer.

Leonard C. Broughton, 69
Carmel, CA — Leonard Charles Broughton, 69, of Carmel, Calif., and longtime resident of Hamilton, Mass. and Kennebunkport, Maine, passed away peacefully after an extended illness. Born in Marblehead, Mass., he was predeceased by his parents, Eloise McRae-Lewis and Norman Broughton. Lennie was a graduate of Salem State College and had a Masters in Business Education from Boston University. He retired in 2005 after 38 years of service at Masconomet Regional School District, a vocation about which he was absolutely passionate. A very caring man, Lennie enjoyed golf, fishing, walking on the beach and volunteering for many organizations. He served on the Board of Selectmen and was the Chairman of the Board of Public Works in Hamilton. Lennie is remembered by his children, son Kevin (Karen) Broughton of Kennebunk, Maine, daughter Elizabeth (Chris) Lynch of Worcester, Mass., son Dennis (Lin) Broughton of Westfield, N.J., and daughter Barbara (Glen) Getchell of Boxford, Mass., and 13 grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings, brother Don (Susan) Broughton of Atlanta, Ga., sister Norma Pizzo of Amesbury, Mass., brother Ken (Stella) Broughton of Prescott, Ariz., and twin sister Linda (Jim) Tunney of Pebble Beach, Calif. He is also survived by his former wife of 48 years, Claire Broughton of Kennebunkport, Maine.

He is predeceased by his wife, E. Marie McIntosh and son, Keith McIntosh.

Hanford Thurber, 88
Ipswich — Hanford Thurber, 88, of Ipswich, beloved husband of Helen E. (Parsons) Thurber, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Waltham on August 26, 1924, he was the son of the late Angus and Louisa Grant Thurber, who were formerly from Nova Scotia. Hanford attended Waltham High School, and completed his education at Wentworth Institute. Entering the U.S. Navy in 1942, he served aboard the USS Monongahela, USS Davis, and USS Oglethorpe, honorably discharged in 1948. In 1950, he was called back to serve in the Navy during the Korean War, honorably discharged in 1952. Throughout the years, he was employed at Corliss Brothers Nursery and Tedford & Martin’s both in Ipswich, and most recently at Bostik Chemical Company in Middleton, from which he retired in 1986.

Swampscott — Mrs. Karen P. (Wood) Hall, 70, of Swampscott, died Thursday in the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a short but courageous battle with ALS. She was the wife of David L. Hall, with whom she would have celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary on June 9. She was the daughter of the late Clark W. and Pauline G. (Palmer) Wood. She lived in Swampscott for the greater part of her life, and was a graduate of Swampscott High School, Class of 1960.

A graduate of Swampscott High School, he lived in Swampscott for 40 years, and had resided in Lynn for the past 27 years.
