To the editor:

The Friday, July 16, front page of The Salem News featured another pretentious effort by certain business interests to celebrate Salem as a great, growing city.

There were even mentions of New York and San Francisco in comparison!

What's next for a tinsel-touched old lady that was once a real place?

If it isn't a fake artists' row, it's a new "LoLa" transformation for the area near the corner of Lafayette and Derby streets. You can only do so much with a mannequin.

Our V0iew: Small groups produce big results

The artful restoration of historic structures in Beverly and Salem were cause for celebration last weekend.
Friday night the public was invited to tour an enlarged and modernized administrative wing of Salem's oldest house of worship, the First Church Unitarian, near the corner of Essex and North streets. Sunday afternoon the focus was on Beverly's Lynch Park, where the last building left from what was once a great oceanside estate — the carriage house — was opened for public inspection.

Those of us who started out our careers in the aisles of a grocery store no doubt remember the monotonous ka-chunk of the price-tag gun.
The endless patter of small, sticky tags getting slapped onto the tops of hundreds of cans, bottles, and packages of every sort, provided the ideal background noise for drifting off and thinking about all the good times you were missing while at work.

Letter: Time to allow cars on the mall

To the editor:
So the city is moving ahead with improvements (plantings, benches, etc.) on the Essex Street pedestrian mall.
I am reminded of the creepy guy in the phone ad who advises you that you are in a "dead zone."
