Letter: Dominion behaving like 'economic ogre'

To the editor:

Dominion is once again playing games with the Salem community and our state ("Activists see signs of power plant's demise;" page 1; Monday, Sept. 7).

Dominion's corporate headquarters in Virginia continues to figure out ways that it can get the most money out of the Salem plant. Meanwhile, the corporation is also positioning itself to have the ultimate flexibility to close the Salem clunker at any time.

Salem's history of losing tanneries and mills should make us skeptical of how much commitment corporations have to our city.

The regional Independent Service Operator (ISO-NE) has determined that the Salem plant is in all probability not needed after 2011. Not bidding into the must-run auction for 2012 allows Dominion to have no responsibility to run the plant after 2011 (when its "corporate welfare" known as "must-run payments" end).

The current three-year tax deal with the city also ends in 2011.

Let's not wait until 2011 to plan for a new Salem without a dirty, coal-burning plant. Dominion could clean up its act and use natural gas, explore wind in Salem Sound, and be a participant in our city, rather than acting like a threatening economic ogre. I call on our elected leaders to find the money in state or federal funds to create a transition team for our city with or without Dominion.
