To the editor:
As a member of Citizens for Limited Taxation I recently received an update concerning a bill now on Beacon Hill concerning property taxes for seniors.
Seniors earning $60,000 and not paying a mortgage will be exempt from paying some of their property taxes. CLT executive director Barbara Anderson contends the bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Ruth Balser, D-Newton, is trying to get money for a Newton high-school project with an out-of-control budget.
If this bill passes, the hope is that seniors will stay away from the polls in the event of an override vote; or that seniors will vote for an override because it won't affect them.
I for one don't want to burden my neighbor who has three children and a mortgage with higher property taxes. So beware all you seniors , together we can defeat this end-run around Proposition 21/2. Call your legislator and them him to vote no on H-4534.
With town meetings coming up in May, it's imperative to act on this now.
