Letter: No winners in Hamilton-Wenham override debate

To the editor:

For the past few months, I have been reading the material that the group SOS (Save Our Schools) has been sending out. In all honesty, I have to say that the group should be commended for their time, effort, energy and dedication toward the goal of keeping the education system intact.

The towns of Hamilton and Wenham are fortunate to have them. I have had an opportunity to spend a little time with a few members of SOS, lobbying on Beacon Hill, and I was impressed with their hard work and intelligence.

I am part of a group in Hamilton called "Enough is Enough," a group opposed to the override. We do not oppose any of the goals of SOS. We just have a different issue, that of the financial strain being placed on the taxpayers of our towns.

The financial crisis in the schools, not just in Hamilton and Wenham, the pain being felt by many taxpayers and the declining economy are all the ingredients needed for creating the "perfect storm" of grief. No matter how the override vote turns out there will be no joy.

The legislators need to revamp a broken system of funding public education in Massachusetts. Homeowners alone cannot bear the burden.
