To the editor:

Regarding the Saturday, July 26, story headlined, "Man cited for parking on hash marks":

I wonder why Mr. Dragonas would park in a handicapped parking space? If he is a doctor, shouldn't he know better?

Most people know that any space with lines through it is not a legal parking spot. As an employee of Super Sub, I can tell you that at no time did anyone tell Mr. Dragonas, or anyone else, that it was OK to park in that spot. We routinely tell our customers that they cannot park in that spot, when we notice they are there.

Mr. Dragonas should have known better, and be mature enough to pay the fine that was issued to him.

This busy crossroad is the oldest intersection in the oldest community in the county, and has a judicial, religious and commercial heritage that is hard to match.

Our View: Good news in street tough's bad break

A rather remarkable decision by a three-judge Superior Court appeals panel has struck a blow for the right of citizens to feel safe on their streets.
The case involved Paul Cucinelli's appeal of the 10-to-15-year sentence he received for a series of assaults that occurred in Beverly in 2006. The self-styled leader of a gang called the "Warrior Brothers," Cucinelli was found guilty of conducting three random street muggings — meant as gang initiation rites — one of which left a Lynn man with a crushed skull and other serious injuries.

Letter: Spare your family pain of making end-of-life decisions

To the editor:
The ongoing national debate on health care continues to focus a great deal of attention on end-of-life care, and has raised public awareness about why you should document in advance your wishes regarding medical care should there come a time when you are unable to speak for yourself.

Letter: Salem Harborwalk turning out as expected

To the editor:
In July of 2010 The Salem News published a short letter I wrote in response to an article headlined, "Celebrating the South River Harborwalk grand opening."
In that letter I questioned the potential return on the mayor's investment of $1.6 million of state and local funding in the South River Harborwalk, and suggested that the only beneficiaries of this expenditure would be the city's homeless.
