To the editor:

Law-enforcement families nationwide will be decorating for the holidays in blue again this winter, honoring and remembering those law enforcement officers, such as Middleton police Sgt. Edward Couture, who have given their lives in service to the profession, and thanking those officers who continue to work America's increasingly dangerous streets each and every day of the year.

I retired from the position of police chief in Middleton in 2007 and now serve on the board of directors for Concerns of Police Survivors as their Northeast trustee.

In 1997, Middleton police Sgt. Edward Couture was struck and killed while directing traffic on Route 62 in Middleton. He left behind his wife and two daughters, and a grieving community.

The color blue is a symbol of peace. Put blue lights in your window; decorate your tree in blue; trim the outside of your home or the police station in blue lights. Let our blue lights shine in support of law enforcement this season. You will send a dual message that you support America's peacekeepers and that you hope the coming year will be a year of peace.

Our View: Mountains of mulch need close monitoring

On the one hand it's an encouraging sign of spring's approach when landscapers start stockpiling mulch to spread around homes and office buildings when the threat of snow has vanished. But such piles become problematic when they catch on fire as happened on Farm Avenue in Peabody Monday.

Project for PEM: Restoration of the Grimshawe House

To the editor:
Now that the Peabody Essex Museum has become a major landlord in downtown Salem, it might be time for this institution to perform a noble restoration.
By this I mean bringing the "Grimshawe House," Nathaniel Hawthorne's wife's former residence, back to its Federalist-period glory.

Letter: Autistic son denied opportunity to skate

To the editor:
My son Jack is 6 years old and autistic. Though high functioning, he still possesses all of the characteristics of an autistic child.
My husband and I are constantly trying to involve him in physical activities in order to help make him feel more included and keep him physically active. This is, of course, challenging for a child that has difficulty attending or paying attention to instruction and waiting his turn. We recently enrolled him in karate with the understanding that in order for him to participate, either my husband or myself or Jack's therapist will be next to him the whole time supporting him and helping to keep him on task.
