Letter: Saddened by Walsh’s remarks

To the editor:

I was shocked, saddened and disappointed to read of Brendan Walsh’s comments about the Salem Education Foundation.

Salem is very fortunate to have such an organization made up of parents and community members who support the public schools in large and small ways. The foundation offers broad support and advocacy for quality education for the children of Salem. The teacher grants have provided years of funding for special projects. Though the grant awards are publicized in the newspaper, readers may not realize the wide variety that are funded: field trips, musical performances, artists-in-residence, special art supplies, bags of books for reading at home, literacy events, and many more.

In my roles as a parent and educator, I have attended many School Committee meetings in six different school districts. Greetings, praises, announcements and acknowledgements from presenters, audience members, parents, community members, and, yes, School Committee members, are common at these meetings.

So, if foundation representatives chose to congratulate new members, what’s wrong with that?
