Letter: Tisei a victim of lies

To the editor:

While growing up, I was always taught that lying is wrong. My guess is this lesson is one that John Tierney and his cronies never learned as demonstrated by their constant barrage of falsehoods against Richard Tisei. I can only assume this is an attempt to distract from major ethical charges, and what The Boston Globe called a congressman with a “modest record” at best.

I turned on my television to see an ad about the people “behind Richard Tisei.” If it weren’t so offensive, it would be funny to watch. The ad, like Tierney’s own, seeks to attack Richard for wanting to “end Medicare,” an assertion the nonpartisan watchdog rated as the “lie of the year” and holding no foundation anywhere. It tries to tie Tisei to Paul Ryan’s budget, a plan he openly opposes, because he said it was a good start. Here’s the truth, we need a lot of good starts when it comes to addressing our $16 trillion debt. You know who doesn’t have any good starts ... John Tierney! He seems to wish away this critical crisis rather than reach across the aisle to find workable solutions!

The ad further tries to connect Richard with efforts to “undermine women’s access to birth control,” which is another outright lie. Richard has a lengthy record of supporting a woman’s right to choose and has stood up to Republican leadership on this matter and has said he would do so when in Congress. He said he has no problem with funding Planned Parenthood and would oppose anything close to the Blunt Amendment, restricting access to contraception.

I know it’s too much to ask for John Tierney to run an honest and positive campaign. However, I do believe the voters in the 6th District are too smart to buy into these outrageous false accusations!
