Letter: Local harbormasters keep us safe

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

With the sailing season over, it is time to recognize the people who keep us safe in Salem Sound.

Post-9/11, we saw an increased demand on the U.S. Coast Guard for security issues. That left a big gap for inshore safety. Many local coastal cities took advantage of homeland security funds and stepped up to fill the void. Harbormasters went from knowledgeable local boaters to professionals, using state-of-the-art equipment. One advantage they had over the Coast Guard was they brought a local and personal touch.

One may think that the harbormaster’s job ends in November, but look back to last year when Salem’s harbormaster rescued a sailor midwinter. In the coming years, there will be a lot of activity in Salem Sound: a gas pipeline, power plant work and a new sewer line to Marblehead.

This will put additional demands on the harbormasters, but I am sure they are up to it .

So, in closing, a big thanks to the local harbormasters.
