To the editor:

Our country is drowning in debt and yet TV news shows ignore this! Instead we're told again and again about another multi-billion-dollar program that will solve all our problems.

The US Debt Clock says we have a $13 trillion national debt, which means every man, woman and child owes $42,000. And this doesn't take into account the "unfunded liabilities" such as Social Security and Medicare. Our politicians have dipped into those funds to the tune of $109 trillion, meaning each citizen owes another $353,000 for those!

And who will bear the brunt for all this? It will be our children and grandchildren!

It's time we come to our senses and tighten our belts before our great nation is totally bankrupt. Let's take action at the ballot box on Nov. 2 by casting our votes for candidates who want us to live within our budget. (And that means kick all incumbents out!)

New England will once again be the focus of the Republican presidential sweepstakes tonight when the party announces the results of city and town caucuses in Maine. But they are unlikely to bring much clarity to a race in which Mitt Romney, despite a few key victories and a decided advantage in money and organization, has failed to close the deal with voters.

Our View: Mountains of mulch need close monitoring

On the one hand it's an encouraging sign of spring's approach when landscapers start stockpiling mulch to spread around homes and office buildings when the threat of snow has vanished. But such piles become problematic when they catch on fire as happened on Farm Avenue in Peabody Monday.

Our View: Arbitrator's ruling reflects giveaways of the past

Salem's Kim Driscoll is simply the latest municipal chief executive paying the price for labor giveaways of the past.
More than a third-century ago, someone at City Hall apparently thought it would be no big deal to provide retiring superior officers in the Police Department with a parting gift in the form of benefits they would have earned through the remainder of the fiscal year.
