To the editor:

Our country is drowning in debt and yet TV news shows ignore this! Instead we're told again and again about another multi-billion-dollar program that will solve all our problems.

The US Debt Clock says we have a $13 trillion national debt, which means every man, woman and child owes $42,000. And this doesn't take into account the "unfunded liabilities" such as Social Security and Medicare. Our politicians have dipped into those funds to the tune of $109 trillion, meaning each citizen owes another $353,000 for those!

And who will bear the brunt for all this? It will be our children and grandchildren!

It's time we come to our senses and tighten our belts before our great nation is totally bankrupt. Let's take action at the ballot box on Nov. 2 by casting our votes for candidates who want us to live within our budget. (And that means kick all incumbents out!)

The Salem School Committee took the smart course of action Monday night, voting to keep the Saltonstall School's extended day and year in place for the time being while studying ways to extend the benefits of that program to all students in the future.

Our View: Tiny bridge has big problems

State contractors have been busy recently putting a new surface on the northbound side of Route 128 between Lowell Street in Peabody and Endicott Street in Danvers.
That will mean a smoother ride for motorists headed towards Danvers, Beverly and Cape Ann. But left unaddressed is the great big bump motorists experience if they happen to have the misfortune of driving in the passing lane on the other side of the highway.

Band director's final concert is tomorrow

Raymond Novack's final BHS spring concert will be held Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at the high school.
Free and open to the public, the evening will feature, besides the choral and strings groups, the BHS Concert Band in a world premiere performance of "Supernova," a piece composed by Novack's former student and 1993 BHS graduate Michael Benoit. "Supernova" is Benoit's opus to honor Novack; the band kids are calling it "Super Novack."

When Beverly High School's band director Raymond Novack announced his retirement to the Beverly Music and Performing Arts Association (BMPAA) board, the news caused an unnerving hum — like background music you strain to make out but don't want to hear.
