Letter: Sad to see Walsh go

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

It is sad to learn that Jane Walsh is soon to retire from her position as head reference librarian at the Salem Public Library. Of course, she deserves to have a well-earned retirement, but it will certainly be a challenge to find anyone who even comes close to possessing the qualities that Jane has and that have made the local collections a treasured aspect of the library.

Jane Walsh has been, in my opinion and within my experience, the most dedicated employee in that institution, and I have been using the library since 1968. Jane has given so much of her time and resources beyond what was required to make patrons’ experience rewarding.

I believe there are qualities a reference librarian needs to have, especially in a city as historic as Salem. The first is a love of books and other resources. The second, and most important, is a wide knowledge and love of local history of that city or town. Jane Walsh has both and has gone out of her way in so many ways and for all these years to contribute to the city of Salem. She will be missed.
