Letter: Shocked by SJC ruling

To the editor:

I am writing to address the recent Supreme Judicial Court ruling on extending parole to convicted criminals that will allow juvenile murderers to be set free into society.

On Nov. 18, 1992, my cousin Beth Brodie was brutally murdered. I will never forget that day. After several frantic phone calls, I was able to reach my mother, who told me that Beth was dead.

I still remember the sound of my own scream.

My memories of the days and months that followed are somewhat blurred.

At the time I was 19, away at college and too far from home where I wanted to be so I could be close to my devastated family. My own grief was debilitating.

Now more than 20 years later, I am remembering and reliving that pain shockingly and unexpectedly. Our only comfort was that Beth’s killer would remain in jail for the rest of his life. Forever seemed to mean just that, but not anymore.

I ask that the public provide support to my family and other families who have suffered the same fate to reverse this terrible ruling.
