To the editor:
I read with interest the Jan. 16 letter to the editor from Julie Whitlow regarding the proposed Winter Island turbine.
I can appreciate that not all residents — Willows and otherwise — are against the turbine being put on Winter Island. However, she and others who are for it seem hellbent on accusing those of us who are not of being anti-green energy. It's simply not the case!
The only thing we are against is the ruination of Winter Island. I and many others would like to see the turbine placed offshore. Indeed, it is more expensive, but doing the right thing usually is.
The increased cost of putting the turbine offshore can be offset by additional funding from the federal and/or state governments. Mayor Kim Driscoll and our state and federal representatives (Keenan, Tierney, et al.) have done a great job of getting a lot of funding for Salem. I am very confident that they can continue that success with additional funding for an offshore turbine.
I am not, repeat NOT, anti-green energy! However, I AM confused that those who claim to be green would support the destruction of a beautiful and historic landmark such as Winter Island.
