Thanks: Taste event helps support North Shore Cancer Walk

To the editor:

The third annual Taste of the North Shore took place on Wednesday, April 4, at Acura of Peabody.

The event, a fundraiser for the North Shore Cancer WALK/RUN, was a great success, raising over $25,000 to help ensure quality care to cancer patients at North Shore Medical Center in Salem and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers.

We could not have had nearly as much success had it not been for the generosity of all of the local restaurants that provided delicious food for the evening, including 62 Restaurant & Wine Bar, Salem; Cape Ann Brewing Co., Gloucester; Capt's Waterfront Premium Steak & Seafood Grill, Salem; Century House, Peabody; Henry's Market, Beverly; Legal Sea Foods, Peabody; Pellana, Peabody; Red Lulu Cocina & Tequila Bar, Salem; Red Rock Bistro & Bar, Swampscott; Salem Waterfront Hotel & Marina; Short Cakes, Middleton; Treadwell's World Famous Ice Cream, Peabody; and Victoria Station, Salem.

We are also extremely grateful to the several area businesses that donated items for our silent and live auctions.

Kim Carrigan, Emmy award-winning media personality, generously donated her time to serve as auctioneer for the event, which proved to be a lively time and raised thousands of dollars for the cause.

I would also like to thank the 2012 Steering Committee for the North Shore Cancer WALK/RUN, including 2012 WALK chair Jason Maxwell of MassPay; Joel Avery of Acura of Peabody; Patrick Belmonte and JoAnn Gillette of North Shore 104.9 FM; Lisa Carbone of Eastern Bank; Denis Garriepy of Walsh Brothers; Kevin Noyes of People's United Bank; Jason Sevinor of Designer Bath and Salem Plumbing Supply; and Judy Toner of Sagan Realtors.

Additionally, I'd like to express my gratitude to Joel Schwartz, M.D., Director of Oncology Services, and Jim McIntyre, M.D., Chief of Radiation Oncology, both of Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, for their tireless dedication to not only their patients, but also assisting with outreach and fundraising.

Finally, I'd like to thank each person who attended the third annual Taste of the North Shore, as well as all those who have contributed to the North Shore Cancer WALK/RUN throughout the years.

The Taste of the North Shore directly supports the North Shore Cancer WALK/RUN. All proceeds will help further the renovation of the inpatient oncology unit at NSMC Salem Hospital as well as augment wellness programs and services at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.

Our facilities, services and staff together provide outstanding cancer care to our community and we are so grateful to all those who contribute, enabling us to continue to do so each year.

The North Shore Cancer WALK/RUN will be held rain or shine June 24 at Salem Willows Park. Since 1991, the WALK has raised more than $17 million. To register or donate, please visit www.northshorecancerwalk.org.
