Letter: School dental care a great idea

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

I would love to say thank you to Paula Dobrow, director of nursing and health services in the Salem Public Schools. Offering teeth cleanings in the schools (“Open wide: Teeth cleanings offered in the Salem Public Schools,” Feb. 6) was a gem of an idea. My daughter took part in the services, and it not only saved me more than $150 but saved countless other children who cannot afford to go to the dentist on a regular basis. One of my daughter’s teeth was cracked; the hygienist informed me of this issue with a statement that read that she needed extra dental care at a doctor’s office. I then took my daughter to her dentist for extra care. Her dentist did not have a problem with the service at all.

I would love to see more services such as these. A permanent or visiting medical facility would be welcome to our community in which students are eligible to receive flu shots or a throat culture if needed. This would cut down not only on the spread of the flu, but attendance issues that arise when a bug or the flu starts to circulate. It sounds as though the one at the high school has been very positive for students.

I hope the Salem School Committee encourages more initiatives such as this in our community. As they say, it takes a village, and this statement holds true for people like Paula, who knows what it takes to raise healthy, happy kids.
