Letter: Slate 'goes above and beyond'

To the editor:

A couple of weeks ago, Ward 3 Councilor James Latter submitted a letter in support of Michael Cahill’s efforts to become Beverly’s next mayor (“Councilor endorses Cahill for mayor,” Oct. 14), While I have always been supportive of Michael’s campaigns for state office, I thought that it was important to let people know that Wes Slate has the support of some of his colleagues on the Beverly City Council, including myself.

For the past six years, Wes has worked tirelessly for the residents of Ward 2 on constituent issues and has done his homework and made educated decisions on citywide issues. He has served as the council’s representative on the schools’ Finance and Facilities Committee, currently serves as the council’s voice on the Harbor Management Authority and chairs the council’s subcommittee on legal affairs. Every responsibility he has chose to take on, Wes goes above and beyond to make sure he knows what is going on in the city.

Wes’ work chairing the city council’s Ordinance Review Committee is paramount to what he is capable of. Ordinance review started in 2000 and for many reasons got off track. It was councilor Slate’s diligence that finally completed this exhausting, yet important, task. As city council vice president the past two years, his aid and support has helped the legislative body of the city run in a much more organized fashion.

The theme of Wes Slate’s campaign has been “Wes will do the work.” Wes has been doing the work for the past six years and has what it takes to continue doing the work in the mayor’s office. While I am honored to support him as a colleague, I am more excited to be supporting my friend, Wes Slate, for mayor.

Whoever your candidates are in this election, please exercise your constitutional right and vote on Nov. 5. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
