With the recent election, we will be getting a new mayor and four new city councillors. There also seems to be a movement within the city for fresh ideas and greater community involvement. I strongly believe that we need to revisit the fate of the city-owned waterfront property. No decisions should be made under the present administration. The Scanlon administration has had approximately 20 years to come up and implement a plan for the city-owned waterfront property. The old abandoned McDonald’s building has been used as a temporary homeless shelter and most recently a storage facility for recycling bins.
The new mayor and council, as well as the surge of community interest, should be able to come up with a much better use then a Black Cow-type restaurant. Nothing against high-priced restaurants — we have plenty of those already in Beverly, and they are a welcome sight on Cabot Street.
The waterfront should be developed for the betterment of the entire community, such as a park-like atmosphere with affordable activities for all of the citizens of Beverly. Some ideas could be several small kiosk-type buildings, a coffee shop, ice cream stand, hot dog truck, arts-and-craft shops, water activities — the possibilities are endless. I urge the present City Council to defer any decision-making process in regarding the long-term leasing of this valuable recreational asset. Heading down the wrong path for so many years doesn’t make it right. The Black Cow idea is a white elephant. The citizens of Beverly have been waiting for more than 20 years for this property to be developed. Let’s make sure it’s what we really need and want.
