Letter: Grateful for Emmerton House

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

I want to express my sincerest gratitude to the Women’s Friend Society for all the work they do to keep the Emmerton House a beautiful, safe and affordable housing option for women. I recently moved out after living there for a period of 20 months.

Established in 1879, the Emmerton House has been serving single working women and students in our community for over a century. It provided me a sense of financial freedom with the benefits of being self-sufficient. As a young artist, I couldn’t be more grateful for having had this space while I worked toward completing my first feature-length film.

I loved getting to know women of all ages and backgrounds while sharing the kitchen and other communal spaces.

The house manager, Karen LaMarine, is constantly working around the house to maintain a clean and comfortable environment for all the residents. It is a truly special and unique resource for women. I will always remember the time I spent at the Emmerton House fondly.
