Letter: A new sign for Forest River

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

I realize that the giant, lighted orange sign just installed at Forest River Park must have been placed there for a reason other than to block my view of the park and the water. I wonder, however, if the message could periodically be changed from its warning about leashing dogs and cleaning up their poop to something more relevant to the neighborhood. I’m thinking the sign could say, “Drug dealers, go away,” “Shoot up elsewhere,” or maybe “Drunk college students, be quiet.”

“For the love of God, slow down” would certainly be a popular sentiment around here, as would “Stop lighting fireworks at 3 a.m.” and “Don’t throw your trash on people’s lawns.” On a personal note, I’d really appreciate it if the sign could occasionally say “Don’t abandon any more dogs in Todd’s yard.”

Now, clearly these neighborhood issues are secondary to the occasional pile of dog poop plaguing the park and the city in general, but if and when the dog poop epidemic abates and the folks down at City Hall have a moment, perhaps they could see their way to re-task the sign or, I don’t know, since the park is supposed to close at sunset, maybe figure out a way to enforce the law?
