Letter: Salem market should only allow local farmers

To the editor:

I truly believed a local farmers' market, which Salem offers to the public on Thursday nights, would feature produce grown by our local, North Shore farmers, which I truly support.

I have been attending weekly the Salem Farmers' Market and have been extremely disappointed to see so many vendors with produce that looks like it comes off the produce shelf at one of our many supermarkets or might have been imported from God knows where.

I don't want imported produce. I want to see our local, hardworking, dedicated farmers get the chance to share their bounty of beautiful fruits and vegetables with us, rather than having to compete with produce that isn't North Shore-grown.

The Board of Health has been by, and so has the weights-and-measures man.

Do they care where the produce comes from?

Our North Shore farmers need to be recognized. They never stop working to bring us the freshest and best produce. That is what a real farmers' market is all about.

How disappointing that Salem has allowed anyone in, not just our local, true farmers.

It's sad.
