Letter: Veteran appreciates comments from ‘spoiled generation’

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

Re. the opinion column in The Salem News of June 8, Mary Alice Cookson’s rendition entitled “The Spoiled Generation,” concerning how to treat our Memorial Day.

As an 88-year-old veteran of the U.S. Air Force over in Europe during 1943 through 1945 during World War II, and a survivor of 30 combat missions over Germany in a B-17 bomber, I was very impressed with the article, which was very fitting and well-documented. As an answer to the question concerning how to treat Memorial Day or its veterans, it could not have been done any better than that.

Editor’s note: Ms. Cookson’s column reprinted, with permission, a speech made by 17-year-old Boy Scout James Butler of Beverly, who spoke at the Memorial Day service about what the holiday means to young people and what is an appropriate way to act.
