Letter: Praise for creators of Fort Beverly

The Salem News

---- — To the editor:

As a multigenerational Army child, grown up in the non-war years when a smaller military meant the camaraderie of an Army post kept military children together, I did not experience the problems today’s youngsters have. However, for my own children, moving into civilian areas when their father was engaged in the unpopular Vietnam war, it was a different story. How they would have appreciated the support of a “Staying Strong,” “Home Base” or “Fort Beverly” program when they were coping with the alienation their situation too often presented. Congratulations and thank you to all the caring people who have created these new programs. All members of the military families so acknowledged will benefit, including the deployed parents, and so will the community that is making them feel so welcome.
